PREFACE

This book is devoted to the presentation of mechanics, properties of matter and waves. It is developed in the context of syllabus for the first year honours course in physics of Bangladesh National University, which may be incorporated with the syllabi of other public and private universities. Endeavors are given to develop a complete, logically connected theory in a lucid and easily understandable way. Some examples related to the theory are also given to explain the idea. The book is divided into three groups: Group A represents mechanics with the development of notions on vectors, linear momentum, rotational kinematics and rotational dynamics. Group B describes properties of matter with the concept of gravitation, elasticity, surface tension and fluid dynamics. Group C describes waves with the explanation of oscillations, waves in elastic media, sound waves and vibration. Each chapter is concluded with exercise involving questions and problems. The reader is assumed to be familiar with physics in HSC or A-Level. It is hoped that the book will be useful to the students as well as to the teachers delivering this course.
